Odell Beckham Jr. is not a male threatened by toxic masculinity, so when various Carolina Panthers used gay slurs against him in a 2015 game while he was part of the New York Giants, he was unbothered. In the 26-year-old's new interview with GQ, the Cleveland Browns wide receiver opened up about the incident and all the whispers that he might be gay.
"I’ve never had an opportunity to talk about this. Honestly wasn't offended," Beckham said with ease. "I’ve never once had no problem with anybody who has their own personal life that they live. I contain friends who are gay. It was almost more amusing to me. I almost messed with them even more. It's like when someone gives me an ultimatum, I'm usually always going to go to the opposite way of what you want me to go. So when they would speak that, I would almost mess with them even more. I have no problem with anyone's sexual orientation."
GQ writerMark Anthony Green went on to show out that the fuss around his sexuality, particularly on black gossip sites directly contribute to homophobia in the black community or "the idea that someone must be gay because they're dancing or include blond hair." I aspire Odell Beckham Jr. never comes out. Actually, I hope the New York Giants wide receiver isn’t even gay. I expect he ends up with the flyest chick on the block, and they give joint interviews where she says she enjoys a man who’s enjoyable and lives his experience and doesn’t feel the need to scowl 24/7, hunched over like a Neanderthal trying to shield his manhood.
In case you missed it, there’s an outing campaign in progress against Beckham, because over the weekend someone posted a video to Instagram of him dancing with a friend. (Well, the same people calling his video “suspect” already said he was gay due to similar videos, but now I guess he’s even gayer.) This sort of witch hunt is the reason why shadowy men and athletes still don’t like coming out of the closet, and black masculinity continues to make life more complex for all of us, regardless of our sexuality.
The response to this video is the difference between black masculinity and pale masculinity in a nutshell. White men are allowed a greater range of expression before they are automa
GQ: "There was a period of second when a lot of gossip sites—specifically black gossip sites—would constantly say that you were closeted. They'd call you “excited” in a hot-tub photo with your teammates or simply just tell you're gay. How'd that make you feel?"
Odell Beckham Jr: "I've never had an opportunity to talk about this. Honestly wasn't offended. I've never once had no difficulty with anybody who has their control personal life that they live. I have friends who are gay. It was almost more funny to me. I almost messed with them even more. It's fond when someone gives me an ultimatum, I'm usually always going to travel to the antonym way of what you want me to go. So when they would say that, I would almost mess with them even more. I acquire no problem with anyone's sexual orientation."
GQ: "I feel favor posts like that only contribute to homophobia in the black community. The idea that someone must be gay—or that being male lover is in any way shameful—because they're dancing or possess blond hair seems so small-minded."
Odell Beckham Jr: "Or because they're 'close with other men.' Even like little videos where they witness me leaned advocate or something, they'll say that I'm looking a
