‘House of the Dragon’ Star Emily Carey Addresses ‘Queerbaiting’ Claims: ‘We Weren’t Making Them Gay’
“House of the Dragon” is halfway through its first season, and the “Game of Thrones” spinoff is preparing for a major time leap. The series is about to skip forward 10 years, with older actors taking over several key roles. Milly Alcock, who plays Rhaenyra, will be replaced by Emma D’Arcy while Olivia Cook takes over the role of Alicent Hightower from Emily Carey.
Carey and Alcock have earned praise for their performances as the young queen and heir to the Iron Throne, but their characters own also been the subject of speculation. Many fans hold noted that the close relationship between the two juvenile girls seems to border on the romantic, with some accusing the display of “queerbaiting” by showing an LGBT connection without fully committing to making the characters gay.
In an interview with Variety, Carey acknowledges that she was involved in conversations about the characters potentially having passionate feelings for each other, even if the more nefarious claims of queerbaiting are misguided.

‘House of the Dragon’s Emily Carey Denies Accusations of Queerbaiting in Prequel Series
House of the Dragon, the prequel series to the record-breaking Game of Thrones, has aired its first six episodes. Believe it or not, we are only four episodes to the end of the first season, and what a journey it has been so far. The first five episodes of the prequel series introduced us to a younger Lady Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey) and Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock). The pair at the start of the series enjoyed a stunning friendship, but soon the political scheming and failings of their fathers would set them at each other’s throats by the time they are replaced by Olivia Cooke and Emma D’Arcy. Carey has, however, been drawn into responding to allegations of queerbaiting leveled against the show.
Carey’s Alicent and Alcock’s Rhaenyra both put up stellar performances in their respective roles, so much so that seeing them depart was sad. Many fans of the show have, however, alleged that the close relationship distributed by the characters skirted on romantic terrains, with the series accused of “queerbaiting”. While speaking to Variety, Carey pushed support on those

SPOILER ALERT: This interview contains spoilers through Episode 5 of ‘House of the Dragon,’ which aired on HBO on Sept. 18and is streaming on HBO Max.
Emily Carey isn’t here for any Alicent Hightower slander. The 19-year-old “House of the Dragon” star knows her character may not immediately win hearts — the notion of your finest friend marrying your father is a tough pill to swallow, after all.
But Carey insists there’s much beneath the surface for the youthful queen, who they believe deserves more sympathy.
“Marrying Viserys is a choice. But it was never her choice to make. The selection was made by the men around her. The amount of misogyny that Rhaenyra faces, Alicent gets just as much,” the thespian tells Variety ahead of the series’ fifth episode.
“I read the books. In the future, she does construct some questionable choices — let’s place it that way,” she acknowledges with a laugh. “But that’s not the adolescen
