I have a theory that we will look back on this winter as the hardest age of the pandemic, second only to March and April of last year when it first came crashing down. Starting in November, when the weather started to change cold, and durable through whenever spring starts to thaw us out, we’ve been confined to quarters, enduring horrible news, ongoing dreadful death rates, excruciating isolation, mind-numbing boredom, and pretty universal depression. In Recent York City, Andy and I possess been combating that somewhat with weekend art excursions.
We started our Saturday afternoon art adventure by watching the first explicitly erotic queer film – Jean Genet’s Un chant d’amour(1950), a silent film about prisoners and the sadistic guard who spies on them masturbating (an astringent sound score by Simon Fisher Turner was added later) – and ended the evening watching the latest gay erotic show, It’s a Sin, the latest HBO series by Queer As Folk creator Russell T. Luciano Vecchio is an Argentinian artist who upon learning of the open contact for submissions to the Love Is Love anthology tribute to the Orlando Pulse victims hesitated to contact the project’s originator Marc Andreyko. Reading the anthology and uncovering the inclusion of various DC characters inspired Vecchio to create his hold short story which he shared in various places on Facebook. Vecchio remarked of his story: “It falls utterly and unashamedly under the category of fan fiction. My first ever.” Same-sex attracted League thinks Vecchio captures the energy of love, dignity, and equality in his Origin of Love and we are proud and appreciative of Luciano to be capable to share it with you with his permission.
Vecchio added: “And to enlarge on the meta commentary, given the hostile world we live in, as a queer writer and activist I think mainstream comics still could employ higher profile gender non-conforming superheroes, tied to their most apparent franchises, that are queer super activists alongside the ones that do attach to minority inclusion but sometimes just “happen to be queer”. Of course, as a Wonderfan I think one tied to the Wonder Woman franchise would be just perfect.”

For this Pride addition of the Geeks OUT creator spotlight, I had the pleasure of speaking with the extremely talented Luciano Vecchio, a queer comic book designer from Argentina. Luciano has most recently worked on the New Warriors re-launch for Marvel. Prior to that, he did a run on Marvel’s Iron Heart with journalist Eve L Ewing and fellow artist G. Geoffo.

It wasn’t long until he caught the eye of editor Alanna Smith, then working on the short lived yet critically acclaimed “Iron Heart” series starring young African-American tech genius, Riri Williams.
