Casting has been revealed for the upcoming second annual Say Queer Plays, Voyage Theater Company's festival of staged readings of seven new plays with queer themes. The performance will be held June 30 at Judson Memorial Church.
As with last year's inaugural offering, the works will all become accessible royalty-free to non-profit theatres, colleges and universities, and society organizations nationwide for use as fundraising events for local LGBTQIA+ groups. The June 30 show will benefit Judson Commons.
Maya Gibson and Denise Manning will lead Kamilah Bush's Words the Wind Carried Me, directed by Tyrone Mitchell Henderson. Jesse Aaronson and Troy Iwata will star in Vichet Chum's Actor on Actor, with Seonjae Kim directing. Haruna Lee's Let's Sit Down, directed by Kedian Keohan, will film Ching Valdez-Aran, Drae Campbell, and Ni-Ni. Cameisha Cotton and Sky Stringer will perform Azure D. Osborne-Lee's B R I C K, with Paul A. Observe II directing. Brian Quirk's Trust Faith and Confidence, directed by Wayne Maugans, will feature Marcus McGee and Greig Sargeant. Troy Iwata talks gay joy and hilarious haunts in recent LGBTQ+ horror-comedy clip ‘Summoning Sylvia’
A modern horror-comedy film is telling the story of queer friendship amid a spooky adventure dealing with a self-proclaimed witch.
Written and directed by Wesley Taylor and Alex Wyse and distributed by The Horror Collective, “Summoning Sylvia” tells the story of Larry, played by Travis Coles, a gay man who is destined to get married but is thrown for a loop when his three finest friends, Reggie (Troy Iwata), Nico (Frankie Grande) and Kevin (Noah J. Ricketts), “kidnap” him for a bachelor party weekend in a haunted house. When Larry remembers that he was supposed to spend the weekend bonding with his future vertical brother-in-law Harrison, Larry invites him to come along on the adventure.
While they are in the haunted house, the crew recounts the tale of Sylvia, who murdered her son and buried him beneath the house’s floorboards. After summoning the ghost of Sylvia, played by Veanne Cox, during a séance, the group finds out that they are in for more than they bargained for.

Dash & Lily’s Troy Iwata: LGBTQ representation is “incredibly important for young people”
“I remember being a young person, watching TV, and never really seeing anyone who fully looked like me,” says Troy Iwata. “If we were playing Power Rangers at recess, everyone would be like, you’re the Yellow Ranger just because that’s the Asian one.”
The 29-year-old actor’s father is Japanese, but he was raised primarily in a “white household,” by his mother, who is Caucasian. “Everyone was just telling me: you’re Asian, you’re Asian, you’re Asian! But then Asians would be like, ‘You’re only half-Asian, you don’t look like us.’ I felt like I wasn’t enough for either side.”
Iwata pursued a career as an actor — after catching the bug in a grade school production of The Wizard of Oz (he played the Scarecrow) — and made his Broadway debut in 2019 in the musical Be More Chill. Still, the highway has not always been a smooth one, and the talented actor with a broad, radiant smile has confronted more than his share of casting challenges.
