[This story contains spoilers from season seven, episode five of 9-1-1, “You Don’t Know Me.”]
A couple of months ago, 9-1-1 co-creator and showrunner Tim Minear reached out to player Lou Ferrigno Jr. — who had guest-starred in three flashback episodes of the second season — about reprising his role as firefighter Tommy Kinard in the seventh season of the hit Fox-turned-ABC first-responder drama.
Ferrigno Jr., who says he had nothing but fond memories of working with the writer and producer years ago, was instantly intrigued to learn that Minear was in the early stages of writing a multi-episode arc that would allow viewers to check support in with Tommy in the show. That storyline, as it turns out, would involve Evan “Buck” Buckley (Oliver Stark), the ostensibly straight character who would navigate his newfound attraction to Tommy in the landmark 100th episode, which aired last Thursday.
“It was a discussion if I would be willing to have this passionate moment [with Buck], which would be very dissimilar to wha
Lou Ferrigno Jr. is known for portraying the role of a SWAT team leader and decorated officer named Donovan Rocker in the CBS TV series ‘S.W.A.T.’
Louis Jude Ferrigno Jr. was born on November 10, 1984 in Santa Monica, California. He grew up in a family of actors, as his father Lou Ferrigno is an actor and bodybuilder while his mother Carla (Green) Ferrigno is also an actress.
Ferrigno studied at the University of Southern California, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from the Annenberg School for Communication and a minor in Business Regulation back in 2007. Initially, he was pursuing a career in football, however, he suffered a knee injury as a walk-on linebacker for the 2007 Rose Bowl Champion USC Trojans.
The incident ended his career as an athlete, therefore shifting his center to acting and improvisation. Ferrigno has since appeared in a couple of films and television shows, including playing the role of firefighter Tommy Kinard in the TV series ‘9-1-1’ which got us to really see him.
In fact, he was part of the landmark episode in the show’s seventh season. As his character was the impetus for Evan “Buck
It's not a gay thing, it's a deadweight ethics thing. Yes, Tommy is nice. Lou Ferrigno Jr is nice. But they don't actually do anything for the stories or the show except pop up from time to time. Remember, 9-1-1 is a 40 minute demonstrate where every second counts. If they're not given a role or purpose, their existence is meaningless, and 9-1-1 has (to some degree) already added more characters to their roster (Mara, Ravi, and possibly Brad). 9-1-1 is a show that becomes frequently overcrowded, so I can't say that I'm upset about this choice. These things happen. Characters are phased out because that's the nature of television, especially when a show is in transition. But if they were going to do something significant with Tommy's traits, they would have done it with Season 7. The fact that they didn't and just kept him as "Buck''s adore interest" was just writing on the wall. Sorry you're disappointed though. /s
