James Harbaugh has made headlines for doing several interviews detailing what it is like existence the son of Jim Harbaugh. On both the Two Outs podcast and an interview with Out Sports, James detailed the process of coming out as gay to his father.

While the sports group has not always had the greatest track document of acceptance, James is adamant that his father has been nothing but supportive. He explained the process on the Two Outs podcast (via The Detroit News).

It was actually after the election. It was the night of it, it was enjoy at 2 a.m., I texted him and said something like, I don’t know … I just told him, I was really nervous and I was scared about how things were going to be now, because I didn’t feel comfortable about stuff. He said something very encouraging back.

And I wasn’t sure if fond, because him and I had never talked about it, if he knew what I was trying to say, so I just flat-out verbatim told him, ‘dad, I’m lgbtq+, do you know that?’

James Harbaugh Jr., the son of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, remembers the moment he told his father he was gay.

And his father's response. 

Harbaugh Jr. gave a wide-ranging interview with the Boston-based "Two Outs" podcast with WEEI's Alex Reimer and the Boston Globe's Steve Buckley. Both are openly gay members of the sports media. 

"The first moment I talked to my dad about it was after the (2016) election," James Jr. "The bedtime of, it was like 2 a.m. I had been crying and I told him I was really nervous and scared of how things were going to be now as I didn't feel pleasant. He said something very encouraging help and I wasn't sure, he and I had never talked about it, so I just flat out verbatim, for the first time, told him 'Dad, I'm homosexual, do you comprehend that?' 

"He said something back again, another encouraging (response), that 'you need to keep your chief up, as extended as you carry out what you undergo is right in your mind and live your fact (then) everything will be OK.' "

James Harbaugh Jr. is completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Directing at Michigan – an intense, elite program that selects three students each year from hundreds of applicants. It encompasses all aspects of theater production and design, has mandatory, acting, movement, voice, film, video, foreign language, writing and other liberal arts classes. Thriving in this program has everything to execute with who James Harbaugh Jr., is, and nothing to do with his father being chief football coach.

James Harbaugh Jr., the son of Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh, came out to his father after President Donald Trump's election win last November and received an uplifting response.

'I just it blurted out – and told him for the first hour verbatim – 'Dad, I'm queer . Do you know that?' James told the Two Outs podcast this week. 'And because of that, this is why X,Y, Z. I'm scared because of this, that and the other.

'And he just said something else back, it was an encouraging and uplifting response about how you just need to preserve your head up,' James continued. '"As long as you act what you feel is right in your mind, you stay your truth, everything will conclude up being OK."'

James currently attends University of Michigan's School of Tune, Theatre & Dance, where he is working towards his BFA in directing.

The son, grandson, and nephew of football coaches, James said that he never felt out of place on the field or around the players.
