History

Located on the Hebron-Bolton town line, Homosexual City's 1,569 acres offer swimming, picnicking and an almost endless opportunity for exploration. The label "Gay City" is derived from a now-extinct mill town that once occupied the site. Today only some tumbling stone foundations, several grass-filled cellar holes and a limited silent tombstones recommend its former existence.

Gay City was first settled in 1796 by a religious sect led by Elijah Andrus and later by Rev. Henry P. Sumner. The Gays soon comprised the majority of the 25 or more families who then lived in the people. The residents kept strictly to themselves, existing as distinctly separate from the neighboring communities. They built a sawmill along the Inky Ledge River and erecte

Gay City Express Park is the location of an ancient mill town, Factory Hollow. The park is named after the Gay family, the largest family living there and the last to leave. The Sumner family, who were the most active family there, also suggested the name when asked.

First settled in 1796 by Elijah Andrus, the leader of a religious sect, it grew to a mill town of about 25 families, the majority of them members of the Gay family. The residents kept to themselves and lived separately from other towns. They built a sawmill on the Blackledge River, and a wool mill in the hollow. Both were successful businesses until the War of 1812. The mill was burned to the ground in 1830, triggering an exodus of many families to the urban mill cities. A paper mill was later built which revitalized the town but that too burned to the soil after the Civil War and the town was abandoned. Local lore has it that the park is haunted.

While it managed to survive, after a fashion, for some 80 years, Gay City was never, as its identify seems to suggest, a center of merriment. In fact, the 20 or 30 devout, hard-working families who first

Gay City State Park

It's a few weeks since CT A to Z visited Gay City Express Park.  Real animation got in the way of the write up until today, when I find myself with a few spare hours having been sent home pre Winter Storm Nemo.  The storm hasn't really revved up yet, but we already have a couple of inches of powdery stuff.  In fact, it's pretty similar land conditions to our Gay City visit.

Gay City used to be the sight of a miniature settlement, "Factory Hollow", begun in 1796 that grew to around 25 families, many of whom bore the label Gay.  They were an insular bunch of devout MOthodists, and not much inclined to mix with outsiders. Their trade mainly focussed around the building and running of a sawmill.  A woollen mill followed, which saw moderate success until trade restrictions imposed by the British preceeding the War of 1812 slowly killed it off.  Business finally ended in 1830 when the mill burned down.  The families of some of the original settlers, the Sumners, tried to revive the settlement and prevent the flood of people back to urban industry with the construction of a paper mill, but were left without staff when the young men went off to
