During the first week of January, more than 8,000 attendees, most of them young people from across the country, gathered together in downtown Chicago for the FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) SLS18 evangelization training conference. One of the featured speakers at the event was Father Mike Schmitz, director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Diocese of Duluth and chaplain for the Newman Center at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Father Schmitz is known for his popular Internet videos and podcasts about the Catholic faith, and is also the composer of the new book Made for Love: Same-Sex Attractions and the Catholic Church, in which he presents the compassionate fact of Catholic teaching on gay attraction. Father Schmitz was proficient to find some time during the conference to talk a bit about this and other subjects.

Father Mike Schmitz has done the Church a great service by writing his new publication, Made for Love: Homosexual Attractions and the Catholic Church, which was released last November. I desire I had this guide when I was an adolescent young man, trying to navigate my existence of faith with my attractions to men, for I think if I had encountered it when I was a teenager, my life would own been very different. I would have finally establish something that made meaning of my experience and, more importantly, found a path forward that could help me find the happiness I desired in my life.
The key to Father Schmitz’s success is that he follows the model of Jesus.
