Eight NYC Lgbtq+ Bars and Clubs We Miss This PRIDE
BY MICHAEL MUSTO | Happy Pride! There are plenty of queer establishments in NYC at which you can celebrate, but permit me step in between your cocktails and remind you of some past places that were absolute gay heaven. We can briefly remember their glory, then go right back to putting the mo’ help in mojito.
THE BAREFOOT BOY (309 E. 39th St. at Second Ave.) | One prominent element of gay nightlife in the 1970s involved raunchy, sex-driven places like the Anvil—but at the opposite end of the spectrum was the Barefoot Lad, a sleek boogie club that was sophisticated and almost chic. But, of course, sex was the object here too. Everyone’s mission was to hang around till a fantastic song was played (like Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive), ask someone sizzling to dance, and then find yourself doing a line dance together all the way place. Yes, this was way before Grindr, when you had to actually depart out of the house and chat up potential tricks face to face! Can you imagine?
THE CANDLE BAR (309 Amsterdam Ave. btw. W. 74th & 75th Sts.) | A long-running establishment, the Candle brought some gay presence to the Upper West Side—al
Gay Bars That Are Gone
From discos and dive bars to piano bars and cabarets, we’ll observe the shifting typology of the gay bar. Most importantly, we’ll hear from “those who were there” and indulge “those who wish they were”. All this, in the name of sparking a conversation about how to properly preserve and celebrate Recent York City’s “lavender landmarks.” If you’ve walked with us before, we’re highlighting some new LGBT historic sites this year – join us again!

Gay bar and queenly launching pad Barracuda Lounge to shut after three decades in Chelsea
New Yorkers are disheartened at the sudden announcement that Barracuda Lounge, a gay bar with the longest-running drag match in NYC, will close in Chelsea on Sunday, Protest 23.
First reported by BroadwayWorld on Monday, the closure comes after alleged harm caused by the demolition work going on at adjacent buildings to produce way for a luxury condo plan that will build it impossible to conduct business as usual, according to owner Bob Pontarelli in a statement on Facebook (which is not currently shareable).

“In the past few months, a major demolition of the buildings surrounding Barracuda was undertaken,” he wrote. “This included the movie theater that shares our entire East wall and apartments on 23rd street that give our stage. This demolition is the first step of a huge condo project. The harm from the construction has significantly affected the interior and overall operation of the bar. The next step will be the drilling of the bedrock in order
